Cannes Market: Robert Altman Documentary In the Works, ‘Bob would be happy’

A documentary on director Robert Altman will be produced by Sphinx Productions and directed by Ron Mann (“Twist,” “Comic Book Confidential”). The film will explore the life and work of Altman, who gave the world “M*A*S*H,” “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” “Nashville,” “The Player,” “Short Cuts,” “Gosford Park” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Altman died in 2006, the same year he was given an honorary Oscar “in recognition of a career that has repeatedly reinvented the art form and inspired filmmakers and audiences alike.” Altman’s widow, Kathryn Reed Altman, will serve as a consultant, as will producer Matthew Seig who worked closely with the director. Mrs. Altman says, “Ron’s prodigious, challenging, engaging, and one-of-a-kind films revealed him to be the perfect choice to examine and celebrate Bob’s monumental life and art. I have no doubt Bob would be happy and may well be smiling right now.”

Sphinx will partner will EPIX, Astral’s The Movie Network, Dakota Group Ltd. and Submarine Entertainment, who is handling worldwide sales at Cannes.
